Women who love relaxing days at the spa getting pampered with a massage and pedicure treatment but want to do it yourself (DIY) – here are tips to achieve salon-quality results right at home. These simple and easy steps are cheap, fun, and podiatrist recommended.
- First thing to do is to remove all nail polish on your nails with any brand of nail polish remover on a cotton ball. This should be done even if there is no nail polish on your nails, in order to, get rid of any excess oil on the nail bed. For best results, do this 24 hours or more prior to the next steps.
- Next, fill a foot bath, the bathroom tub, or basin wide/deep enough to cover your feet with warm water and add ½ cup of Epsom salt. Soak your feet for no more than 15-20 minutes. For an aromatherapy boost, consider adding a few drops of diluted lavender, peppermint, or eucalyptus essential oil to your foot bath.
- After soaking, dry your feet completely with a clean washcloth. Now, your skin will be much softer and thus the perfect time to treat the areas of dry and thickened skin. Using a pumice stone or foot file, scrape your feet to remove any dead skin, lessen any callous and hard areas caused by pressure from ambulation. ***DO NOT USE ANY SHARP INSTRUMENTS – IMPROPER USE CAN LEAD TO INJURY CAUSING PAIN AND INFECTIONS: WHICH WE WANT TO FULLY AVOID***
- A foot mask/peel can be used instead of a pumice stone or foot file to remove any dead skin. For some people, it may be the safer option or more preferred as it may last longer and cause less physical discomfort.
- Next step is to file and shape your nails. A nail cutter/trimmer/nipper can be used to cut your nails to the length and shape you want. We recommend cutting straight across and then with a nail file to buff out the corners – this method will help to avoid development of any ingrown toenails.
- Avoid damage to your cuticles instead apply cuticle oil to help keep your cuticles soft and moisturized and prevent your nail polish from chipping.
- Now it is time to massage and moisturize your feet with an unscented lotion to keep the skin hydrated and smooth. When you are massaging pay close attention to the areas which are sore.
- Use the fingers of both hands to do strokes on the top of the foot and use your thumbs to do strokes on the bottom of the foot in a circular motion.
- Use your thumbs to massage the arch of your foot – can use your knuckles for deep tissue penetration
- Use the four fingers of one hand and run them into the four interspaces of the toes.
- Finally, to add some color to your feet: i.e., your nails. Be as creative as you want, make a design using a bold color you always wanted to try. If you do not like it or mess up, you can always remove and try again.
- Start by first applying a base coat to all your nails. After about two minutes, the base coat should be dry. Then, apply two to three thin layer coats of any color nail polish of your choice, making sure each coat has dried before the next. - If you want to give your nails a break from chemicals, skip the previous steps about nail polish application and instead apply a cosmetic oil to your nails such as tea tree oil or coconut oil.
