Dr. Birkel is originally from the rugged Pacific Northwest and spent his childhood exploring, hiking, swimming and climbing every tree, rock, creek and mountain he and his three brothers could get their hands on. He met his wife on a blind date at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah while getting his bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science. Dr. Birkel earned his Doctorate of Podiatric Medicine at Des Moines University in Iowa before completing an intense 3 year surgical residency with UPMC Pinnacle Health in Harrisburg Pennsylvania which included credentialing in both forefoot and rearfoot surgery. During his residency he spent a significant amount of time completing rotations in specialties such as emergency and internal medicine, plastic and vascular surgery, as well as infectious disease and wound care, allowing him to apply various techniques and skills from other fields to the treatment of the foot. He was chief resident during his third year of residency and completed a course in microvascular surgery at the world renowned Cleveland Clinic.
When he is not helping patients, Dr. Birkel can be found hanging out with his family enjoying the great outdoors, gardening, or simply reading a good book. He knows from experience that people are happy when they are active. “Healthy, pain free feet are essential to a healthy heart, mind and soul. It is hard to live life to the fullest when your feet hurt.” He is dedicated to helping people walk, dance and run as comfortably as possible and his goal is to do this through conservative means, reserving surgery as a last but sometimes necessary resort.
Dr. Birkel is an Associate of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and is board certified with the American Board of Podiatric Medicine. He is grateful for the many doctors who have contributed to his development as a clinician and a surgeon and is excited to help people in this beautiful part of the U.S. He has hospital and surgical affiliations with both Sentara and Riverside health systems and is currently accepting new patients.
