Focused ESWT 

Focused ESWT (AKA focused shockwave) is a form of ESWT that produces direct, high energy shockwaves that target deep tissue sites. Focused ESWT is a cousin of EPAT, a radial form of ESWT. 

Your doctor may choose focused ESWT as an alternative to or in conjunction with radial ESWT for the more recalcitrant injuries.  Both are evidence-based, emerging, proven treatment options for patients suffering from both acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries. These technologies were developed in Europe and are considered a standard of care in most of the world for treating chronic musculoskeletal conditions. 

How does focused ESWT work?

Focused shockwaves are electromagnetically generated in water and delivered with a hand-held applicator over the injury site.  The water acts as a lens to concentrate the mechanical forces with precision to a targeted area.  ESWT increases blood flow to damaged tissues and bone and induces a cascade of inflammatory factors such as cytokines and chemokines that help regenerate the damaged tissue.  These inflammatory factors are essential for healing and are present at high levels in acute injuries, but diminish or cease to exist over time in chronic injuries. Lastly, focused ESWT has been shown to disintegrate calcified deposits in damaged tendons and ligaments to enable healthier function.   

Think of focused ESWT and EPAT (radial ESWT) as ways of pushing the reset button on healing.
