Warts

Warts are no fun to live with. If left long enough, they can become quite painful, especially when the wart is on the bottom of the foot (this is called a plantar wart). The constant pressure of standing, walking or wearing shoes is not a pleasant feeling when there is a wart on your foot. Lucky for you, Raleigh Foot & Ankle Center is here to help you get back to the activities you love, without the pain or discomfort of a bothersome wart.

A wart (or verruca) is in the skin. It is contracted from our environment and by coming in contact with the virus through an opening in our skin, often on a microscopic level. Once present, the body often creates a callus in response. This is especially common on the bottom of the foot, where a plantar wart may be present. Weight causes the flat appearance of the wart, and often there are small black dots present.

Where Do Warts Come From?

Our immune systems can help prevent getting a wart, but children with developing immune systems can be at risk for contracting the virus. Adults with weakened immune systems or who have not developed immunity can also contract the virus.

What Is There To Do About Warts?

Sometimes warts can go away on their own, or the body’s immune system will fight off the wart. Often warts can be present for long periods of time and can often be painful, especially on the bottom of the foot. The good news is that there are many options for treatment of problematic warts.

If your wart is bothering you, don’t try to treat it on your own. Treatments for warts often include chemicals or other solutions that can be dangerous to the surrounding skin if not used properly. Seek medical help when you decide it’s time to treat that bothersome wart.
