Toenail Problems

Advanced Care For Toenail Problems

Toenail problems can happen at any age, including childhood. The causes may include heredity, injury, poorly fitting shoes, poor circulation, or infection. In addition to causing foot pain and discomfort, toenail problems can adversely affect the appearance of your feet.

Ingrown Toenails

One of the most common problems that podiatrists treat is ingrown toenails, primarily on the big toe. If you have ever had an ingrown toenail, you know how painful they can be. An ingrown toenail can make walking unbearable, or cause your toe to throb even while sitting. When the sides or corners of your nail curl down and dig into the skin, it can cause swelling, pain and redness. That’s an ingrown toenail. Symptoms of ingrown toenails may include pain, swelling, redness, shoe irritation, drainage, and possible infections.

While many things can cause ingrown toenails, the major causes are genetics, shoes that don’t fit well and improperly trimmed nails. Ingrown toenails are common in teenagers and older people, but can happen to people of any age. Treatment options for ingrown toenails depend on the severity of your condition. In some cases, we may remove the ingrown portion of the nail in the office under a local anesthetic. While many people fear this procedure because it may be painful, it is not always the case. The procedure is often painless and rarely needs to be performed more than once. In addition to treating your ingrown toenail, our doctors and staff will help educate you or your child on how to prevent future ingrown toenails.

Toenail Fungus

Fungal infection of the toenails can be unsightly, uncomfortable and painful. In addition, it may cause permanent damage to the toenails and lead to other infections.

Toenail fungus is a common problem, with an estimated 23% of the US population infected. It is frequently caused by the same fungus as athlete’s foot, requiring both to be treated. Symptoms of toenail fungus infections include discoloration and thickening of the nail or separation of the nail from the nail bed. Without treatment at this stage, the nail bed itself may become infected. Our podiatrists can determine how to solve your problem. Remember that fungal infections are treatable in their early stages, so don’t wait. Get your toenail fungus treatment as soon as you can.

There are a number of treatment options available for toenail fungus, from topical medications to oral medications to laser therapy (see our Laser Therapy page for more information). Your doctor will help determine the severity of your toenail fungus and help you to decide the best course of treatment for your toenail fungus.

Raleigh Foot & Ankle Center has been helping people overcome toenail problems for years. Our board-certified podiatrists have over 50 years of combined experience. They can help you overcome your ingrown toenail or toenail fungus problems, too. Don’t wait until your toenail problems are unbearable, treat them today.
