Neuropathy

Pain or numbness in your feet is a significant problem. It can prevent you from participating in the daily activities you enjoy and prohibit you from enjoying your quality of life. If you have neuropathy, chances are you’ve been told that there’s nothing you can do about it. At Raleigh Foot & Ankle Center, we beg to differ: neuropathy treatment is possible!

What Is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a disease of the nerves in your feet, arms or legs that causes weakness, numbness or pain. It is one of many causes of pain or numbness in your feet, so to be sure that your pain is caused by neuropathy, visit the podiatrists at Raleigh Foot & Ankle Center to be properly diagnosed.

What Does Neuropathy Feel Like?

The symptoms of neuropathy are often difficult for a patient to describe; symptoms of neuropathy can even vary from day to day. There are a number of ways patients describe neuropathy, including: tingling, numbness, burning or stinging. It is often described as a feeling of walking on cotton or padding, or a feeling of your socks or stockings being “wadded” up under your toes.

Neuropathy can be characterized by sharp or jabbing pains, sometimes giving you the feeling of standing on needles or glass. Often the pain is accompanied by extreme sensitivity to touch.

Patients often complain of balance issues, or sometimes have fallen due to the balance issues caused by neuropathy. It is common to hear patients describe both pain and numbness in their feet at the same time. It can also cause problems with sleeping.

What Causes Neuropathy?

With so many symptoms, how can you know where your neuropathy came from?

There are many causes of neuropathy. Several of the most common causes include diabetes, chemotherapy, vitamin B1, B6, B12, E, or Niacin deficiencies, and autoimmune disease, such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis or Sjogren’s syndrome.

There is another category of neuropathy that is often diagnosed, called idiopathic neuropathy: this is diagnosed neuropathy with an unknown cause.

Why Should I Be Concerned About My Neuropathy?

If the pain or numbness in your feet isn’t enough to bring you to seek treatment for your neuropathy, there are a number of other reasons you should seek treatment for neuropathy as soon as possible. Your neuropathy can be treated in a number of ways.

Neuropathy often gets slowly worse, and is easiest treated sooner in the progression. Treat your neuropathy as soon as possible for the best possible results!

Just a few of the consequences for neuropathy include open sores which become difficult to heal, infection, difficulty sleeping and pain which is not relieved with medications. Balance issues, including risk of falling or actually falling, is a serious consequence of neuropathy. In severe cases, loss of toes or feet can also result from neuropathy complications.

The Good News

You may have been told that your neuropathy is untreatable. Despite what you’ve been told, neuropathy can be treated. In some cases, the neuropathy can be reversed. Regardless of the case, at Raleigh Foot & Ankle Center, the neuropathy treatment that we provide will help improve your life as a neuropathy sufferer.

What Can Be Done About Neuropathy?

The first step to neuropathy treatment is correct diagnosis of the condition. The doctors at Raleigh Foot & Ankle Center will take a medical history and do a complete foot and ankle examination to ensure correct diagnosis. Other testing, such as nerve conduction or balance testing for balance issues, may be done as well.

Once diagnosed, there are a number of ways to treat neuropathy. At Raleigh Foot & Ankle Center, our neuropathy treatment covers A to Z and everything in between. A number of options include diet recommendations, topical creams, prescription “medical foods”, regular prescription drugs or injections.

There are also electrical stimulation devices, such as our new and very effective Neurogenx machine. Neurogenx is a minimally invasive, outpatient surgery that releases pressure on the nerves for neuropathy treatment. To learn more about Neurogenx, visit our Neurogenx page.
